Prior to taking an IQ test, you should spend some time working on crossword puzzles and word games. You will be surprised to find that some of the words you find in such puzzles wind up on the vocabulary portion of an IQ test.
Brush up on your mathematics. Items such as geometry, simple math problems like addition, subtraction, division, and fractions commonly appear on IQ tests. Moreover, advanced math problems such as algebra and sequencing are found as well.
General knowledge questions appear frequently on IQ tests. General knowledge information is simply the world around you and how much you know about the world around you. For example, it is not uncommon for an IQ test to ask you such questions as "how far is the Earth from the sun?" and "what is the circumference of the Earth?" You can enhance your general knowledge by watching American TV shows like Jeopardy and Cash Cab and by reading periodicals, newspapers, and magazines.
Although there are many other facets of an IQ test, the majority of questions will encompass vocabulary, math and general knowledge. There are dozens of websites that claim to boost intelligence, but there is one that really does it very well and that is the popular website Lumosity. Lumosity is dedicated to enhancing all the facets of intellectual abilities and it will sharpen your brain and quicken your spatial awareness all of which will help you to raise your IQ score.
In the next topic, we will discuss IQ and standard deviation. Although you can bypass this topic, it is helpful in understanding how IQ scores are calculated.
IQ and standard deviation
In statistics and probability theory, the standard deviation shows how much variation or dispersion from the average (mean, also called expected value) exists. A low standard deviation indicates that the data points tend to be very close to the mean; a high standard deviation indicates that the data points are spread out over a large range of values.
When current IQ tests are developed, the median raw score of the norming sample is defined as IQ 100 and scores each standard deviation up or down are defined as 15 IQ points greater or less, although this was not always so historically. By this definition, approximately 100 percent of the population scores an IQ between 70 and 130, which is within two standard deviations of the median.
Next well will discuss IQ and occupation. As mentioned earlier, your IQ does not limit the amount of money you make; however, it usually limits your career opportunities.
