Presidential IQ's

We have compiled a list of former presidents with their alleged IQ scores. We have no proof of the validity of any of these IQ scores listed for the former presidents of the USA. However, many web sites have listed all of these former presidents with their alleged IQ scores as we have listed.

I used the The Unit for the Study of Personality in Politics as my source for this information. Please note that this page is no longer available on the web. There are other web sites claiming that these IQ scores are nothing but a hoax. See Presidential IQ's for the details.

This page is presented as is with no claims of validity and is presented as trivial entertainment.

In the table below, all IQ Scores should be considered a hoax. However, we do have some valid an acceptable IQ scores for the following people:

George W. Bush: His SAT Score equals 1206 which translates to an IQ of 123. Go ahead and ridicule the man as "The Chimp". However, Bush, considered to be the cowboy president, is also the only president to have an MBA, which he earned in the 1970s from Harvard Business School. Obtaining a Masters degree requires an IQ above normal intelligence, therefore, you can rule out a bogus IQ sore of 91.

Bill Clinton: His SAT Score unverified at 1032 which translates to an IQ of 110. However, his actual IQ is probably closer to 137. There is no need to argue his IQ. We know that Bill is indeed an intelligent former president.

John F. Kennedy: Numerous web sites have him correctly listed at 119 IQ. He had a very good education that was interrupted by illness. However, an IQ of 119 seems low considering his educational background.

Jimmy Carter: There is nothing stating his actual IQ score. 175 seems very high and I initially doubted that 175 could be accurate but after some research I found the following: He was educated in the Plains public schools, attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and received a B.S. degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. In the Navy he became a submariner, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and rising to the rank of lieutenant. Chosen by Admiral Hyman Rickover for the nuclear submarine program, he was assigned to Schenectady, N.Y., where he took graduate work at Union College in reactor technology and nuclear physics, and served as senior officer of the pre-commissioning crew of the Seawolf, the second nuclear submarine.

Ronald Reagan: An IQ score of 105 seems very low for him. I seriously doubt that 105 is even close. He has a four year college degree and though I know very little about the basics of being a professional actor, I would assume that an IQ of 105 is very low for someone who acted in as many films as Ronald Reagan. Memory is essential to memorizing scripts and factors highly in evaluating any persons IQ. Here is a synopsis of his education: He attended high school in nearby Dixon and then worked his way through Eureka College. There, he studied economics and sociology, played on the football team, and acted in school plays. Upon graduation, he became a radio sports announcer. A screen test in 1937 won him a contract in Hollywood. During the next two decades he appeared in 53 films.

Keep in mind that when Ronald Reagan attended college, college in his days, consisted of test questions that required more than a number two pencil an a Scantron Sheet. Test Answers required a thorough explanation. Just taking a wild guess, I would estimate his IQ somewhere around 125.

John F. Kennedy: An IQ of 174 is way out of the ballpark. JFK was an intelligent man; however, I doubt very seriously that he had an IQ of 174. However, he had an impressive educational background. The following is from Wikipedia.

In 1940, Kennedy completed his thesis, "Appeasement in Munich," about British participation in the Munich Agreement. He initially intended his thesis to be private, but his father encouraged him to publish it as a book. He graduated cum laude from Harvard with a degree in international affairs in June 1940, and his thesis was published in July 1940 as a book entitled Why England Slept, and became a bestseller.[9] From September to December 1940, Kennedy was enrolled and audited classes at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. In early 1941, he helped his father complete the writing of a memoir of his three years as an American ambassador. In May and June 1941, Kennedy traveled throughout South America.

George H.W. Bush: There is no way possible that Bush Sr. has an IQ of just 98. Like the man or hate the man at least recognize his academic achievements. The following was found about him: "In 1945, Bush married Barbara Pierce. Later that year, he began his college education at Yale University, where he excelled in his course work and in sports." "After World War II, during which Bush served as a naval aviator, he attended Yale University, where he studied economics." I spent a whopping 30 minutes searching for a college degree for Mr. George H.W. Bush but all I could find is what you read in the above paragraph. Once again, Bush Sr. attended Yale University and college exams were comprehensive. He was also a Naval pilot at age 18. How many pilots can you name that flew sophisticated aircraft at age 18 and were of just below average intelligence?

I did not argue every former president's alleged IQ score. Some seem about right, therefore, why argue? But for the former president's who were blatantly over and under rated, I felt that at least I would provide some rationale for their smarts of lack thereof.
